Housing as Essential Infrastructure to Grow Vermont’s innovation Economy
Hula is proud to be a partner and vocal champion of the Ride Your Bike project, and part of Burlington's SECORD initiative, alongside Champlain College and the City of Burlington.
Hula actively supports this project because housing is foundational to Vermont’s innovation economy. Entrepreneurs, workers, creatives, and families need stable, affordable places to live in order to build companies, contribute to communities, and remain rooted in Burlington and more broadly, Vermont.
The Ride Your Bike project will deliver permanently affordable and climate-forward housing within the South End Innovation District—strengthening the ecosystem that Hula exists to support.
By advocating for housing alongside workspace and community infrastructure, Hula is helping ensure the South End remains a place where innovation is accessible, inclusive, and sustainable.

Why Housing Matters to Hula
People make innovation happen. When it’s affordable to live here, our community grows.
-
Who gets to participate matters: Rent and home prices shouldn’t decide who gets to start a company, take a job, or lead an organization.
-
How we grow matters: Building in walkable, car-lite, connected places is better for the environment and better for daily life.
-
Staying power matters: Housing is how we keep Burlington’s creative and entrepreneurial community here and thriving, not just visiting.
Hula champions housing because our mission depends on it.

FAQs — For the Hula Community
Is Hula the developer of the Ride Your Bike property?
No. While Hula is not the developer or owner of the Ride Your Bike property, we share a visionary Founder in Russ Scully. The project is being led by the Ride Your Bike team and development partners, Jonathan Rose Companies. Hula’s role is as a strategic partner and advocate, helping align housing with Burlington’s innovation and economic development goals.
When is development expected to begin?
The Ride Your Bike project is currently in the planning, financing, and permitting phase one or Building A as it’s sometimes called. Construction timing has not yet been finalized and is subject to approvals and funding milestones however, the project has an ambitious timeline because of the urgent need for housing. With approvals in place, construction could start as early as this summer or fall. Hula will share updates as more information is available.
Will construction affect traffic patterns in the South End?
Temporary traffic adjustments are anticipated during active construction periods. Any changes to traffic patterns will be coordinated with the City of Burlington and communicated in advance when possible.
Will Hula’s auxiliary parking at 125 Lakeside Avenue be impacted?
At this time, no permanent changes to Hula’s auxiliary parking at 125 Lakeside Avenue are anticipated before Summer-2026. Hula will communicate clearly and early with members as more information becomes available via the Ride Your Bike project team.
Will Hula members receive housing priority?
Details are still being worked out. While we don’t anticipate a formal priority being given to Hula members, we do believe there will be ample notice and access to available units when they are ready for occupancy. Hula will be in close contact with the RYB team every step of the way to ensure we are well-coordinated and information is shared with Hula members early and often.
