My children are my inspiration.

Marlon Fisher

Marlon Fisher was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up, Marlon attended Camp Dudley for more than twenty years, where he first attended as a camper at the age of ten and worked his way into leadership roles. Marlon attributes his love of nature, community, and leadership development to Camp. After an 8-year stint in the Army as an All Source Intelligence Analyst, Marlon began a long and rewarding career caring for youth in different settings: wilderness, residential, and community. Marlon has spent his life working in countless settings with children and young adults, helping them to create a safe and healthy life for themselves. He has always been especially drawn to working with youth who have difficult backgrounds, or who may have been let down by the adults or institutions in their lives.

Today, Marlon is the Associate Director of Next Generation Leadership for The Frederick Gunn School, located in Washington, CT, where he graduated from high school. Marlon works to engage young alumni to keep them connected and engaged with the school community. Currently, Marlon has become more interested in considering systems and organizations from a bigger perspective, rather than providing direct service. Marlon’s other passions include cooking, stand-up comedy, storytelling, and his two children. Marlon also works part time for Dad Guild as a program staff to help coordinate events and activities for fathers in his community.

What is something you've been learning about recently that interests you?  (emerging tech, art, brands etc.)
I've been really focused on mental health and the role it plays in family systems. There have been a lot of changes in my family and understanding the impacts of stress and mental health has allowed me to manage it in a healthy way.

What are some of your favorite books or ways to learn?
My favorite book is Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Favorite music artists right now? Songs?

Lettuce, Young Blood Brass Band, Nas

What are some challenges that you have faced that have pushed you to where you are today? What helps you overcome these challenges and get through hard times?

A significant challenge that I have faced was bringing all parts of my identity together. A man. A Black man. A Black Father. Each of these comes with society's baggage and by unpacking I'm able to be confident in who I am. What helps me to get through hard times are family, friends, and community.

Do you have a routine or ways you bring more balance to your life?
My routine is taking advantage of the morning. I am up at 6 everyday.

Favorite spots in Vermont?
Vermont State Parks and anywhere along Lake Champlain with a view of the Adirondacks.

What is something you're most proud of?
My two boys.

What is something you heard when you were younger or starting out that pushed you to where you are now and inspired you?Do you have any advice you would give to your younger self or other young entrepreneurs?

The first thing I learned from a mentor was the handshake of success. That has stuck with me since I was six. My advice is to follow up, follow through, and ask for feedback.

What is something most people don't know about you?

I was one of 250 students selected nationwide by Merrill Lynch and the National Urban League to receive a scholarship to college while in the first grade.

Why Vermont? Why Hula?
Vermont is close to the place that activated the leadership skills within me and helped me become who I am today. I like being close to nature. Why Hula? Connection.

How did you find the community you’re working for?

Several years ago I joined my high school reunion committee, and loved reconnecting with my classmates. The timing could not have been more perfect when a position opened up in the Alumni and Development Office. I was looking to change career fields and jump at the opportunity to reconnect with another community that has had great influence in my life.

Who in your life inspires you to stay curious, strive for more, or be the best version of yourself?
My children.
